What is exception seam?

An exception seam is a point in an operating process where the deterministic rules stop and a person starts hunting: a payout that will not tie out, an order held for a reason nobody recorded, a partner document that changed shape. The work is real, recurring, and usually invisible to the systems that report on it.

The definition

Exception seam explained

Seams are not the same as integration errors. An error announces itself in a queue. A seam is the place where the process quietly hands the problem to a human, often with no log entry, no ticket, and no measurement. That is why the hours spent there rarely appear in any system of record and rarely make it into a process map.

Finding the seams is the practical starting point for automation that pays. They show where judgment is genuinely required, where it is merely being requested out of habit, and where a governed workflow with a human approval gate can take the recurring part of the work without taking the decision.
